Insulation Before & After in Woodland Hills, CA
Photos tell the truth faster than a spec sheet ever could. The before images below show attics that were fighting Woodland Hills summers and losing, and the after images show what happens when the right insulation goes in the right way. We document every job because the difference should be visible, not just promised.
Recent Transformations
Attic Insulation Replacement in a 1970s Ranch
The existing batts had compressed to maybe R-9 in some spots, and the homeowner was running the AC nonstop from June through October. We removed the old material, air-sealed the top plates with foam, and blew in GreenFiber cellulose to R-38. The upstairs bedrooms stopped feeling five degrees warmer than the hallway within a week.
Spray Foam for a Vented Attic Over the Garage
The bonus room above this garage was unusable from May to September, and the roof sheathing showed signs of condensation from years of uneven temperatures. Our crew sealed the attic floor and applied open-cell Icynene to the underside of the roof deck, converting it to a conditioned space. The room now holds 75 degrees on a 100-degree Woodland Hills afternoon without a portable AC unit.
Pet-Safe Crawlspace-to-Attic Upgrade
This family has two dogs and a cat, and they didn’t want products that would off-gas or irritate animals that spend time near the attic hatch. We removed the contaminated batts, installed new Knauf fiberglass with a pet-safe binder, and sealed every recessed light housing. The dust stopped migrating down through the ceiling, and the dogs stayed home during the install without issue.
Blown-In Rockwool for a 1920s Spanish Revival
Older homes in Woodland Hills often have beautiful architecture and zero insulation, which this one proved. We blew Rockwool into the attic cavities, paying attention to the irregular joist spacing that comes with a 1920s build. The living room under the west-facing roof no longer radiates heat into the house by 4 p.m., and the homeowner’s evening AC use dropped noticeably.
Owens Corning Batt Replacement with Full Air Sealing
A previous install left gaps where the attic floor met the exterior top plates, and the batts had been shoved away from the soffits instead of baffled. We re-baffled the eaves, sealed the top plates and duct penetrations, and laid Owens Corning batts to a consistent R-30. The attic now stays within a few degrees of outdoor temperature, which is exactly what a vented attic should do.
Full Attic Cleanout and Code-Compliant Insulation After a Roof Repair
After a roofing company replaced the shingles, the attic looked like a job site nobody claimed. We vacuumed out the debris, removed the old insulation that had been walked down, and installed CertainTeed blown-in fiberglass to R-38 with depth markers every 20 square feet. The homeowner now has a clean baseline to check against, and the attic actually feels like part of the house rather than a storage hazard.
